S. Sterling McMillan, Senior Principal Sterling, known to his friends as Ted, has been a Principal and Chief Investment Officer with our team since 1986 (with Greenleaf Capital Management until June of 2008). During that time, he has managed over $65 million in client portfolios, has been primarily responsible for the design and execution of investment research and stock selection, as has had lead responsibility for venture capital, foreign and venture spin-off investment products. Prior to that, he spent 21 years at Cleveland-Cliffs as Assistant Treasurer, Vice-President - Investments, and finally Vice-President - Finance. Having worked for many years analyzing investments from the seller's perspective, he brings this rich experience and insight into selecting investments from the buyer's perspective. Ted has served as a Director, Investor or Trustee of over 15 startup, early stage and growth companies, and currently serves as an Investor and Director of 5iTech, Improvita and Thought Works, an Investor and LLC manager of Toolovation, and an Investor and Director of the Executive Committee of Electrosonics Medical Inc. Ted has served on the boards of numerous civic and philanthropic organizations concentrating on mental health and the arts. He currently serves as a Trustee and as a past Finance and Endowment Committee Chair of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a Trustee and a member of the Psychiatry Advisory Committee of University Hospitals, as a Trustee and Past President, Chairman and member of various committees of Applewood (Children's Aid Society). He is also a member of the Union, Tavern and Deer Isle Yacht Clubs, and is a Director and member of the Rowfant Club. He enjoys woodworking and sailing (and is a past rear commodore), and is currently working on a study of the evolution of a puritan ethic to modern psychology and psychiatry as defined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in his book "Flow, the Psychology of Optimal Experience" through 13 generations of his mother's brand of the Mather family in Boston, Connecticut and Ohio. Ted earned an A.B. in Economics with Honors from Princeton University, and an M.B.A. in Finance/Mergers & Acquisitions from Harvard Business School. |
